something chronic journey
half a lifetime to get here
In 1999, I contracted one of the deadliest infectious diseases there is, called meningococcal septicemia.
A year after surviving, I saw a neurologist who explained that if they compared my brain to a computer (my kind of tech talk...hehe), there was nothing wrong with the hard wiring. But there was a massive problem with the software.
The sepsis combined with inflammation to the layers of membranes known as meninges that protect the brain and spinal cord left me with symptoms much like long Covid. Chronic pain, brain fog, fatigue and several autoimmune challenges.
Time would tell if I would make a full recovery. I never really did.
Flash forward 22 years, and last year, after a super stressful 2020, I was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a rare disorder that comes with the stigma of an illness misunderstood for centuries. I’m committed to playing my part to end the stigma.
